The Rising Voices, Changing Coasts (RVCC) Hub co-investigator Dr. Marika Holland has been selected as a MacArthur Genius Fellow. Dr. Holland has served as a Co-PI with Dr. Daniel Wildcat since the RVCC Hub began its work in 2020. Based out of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO, she has been supporting Dr. Wildcat in helping RVCC achieve its goals.

RVCC is a project based out of the Haskell Foundation and offers internship and grant funding for Haskell students. RVCC is funded by a five-year $20-million grant from the National Science Foundation Coastlines and People Hubs for Research and Broadening Participation (CoPe) program.

Dr. Holland brings a great amount of experience in research studying polar ice and using Earth system modelling, as is indicated by her acceptance to the MacArthur Fellowship. Her participation in this project not only supports the goal of providing highly useful and culturally relevant information to coastal communities, but it also develops RVCC’s understanding of how to develop a successful cross-cultural research framework that can be adapted by future research collaborators.

Dr. Daniel Wildcat, principal investigator of the NSF-funded RVCC Hub project and Haskell instructor, shared, “The recognition of Dr. Marika Holland as a MacArthur Fund Genius for her outstanding contributions to global climate change modelling was not surprising to anyone in the RVCC Hub. Her contributions to our Rising Voices, Changing Coast Converge science activities have been invaluable.”

“The Haskell RVCC Hub’s convergence research shows the best way to understand the complex web of relations that shapes not only our climate, but our everyday lives is to work across cultures and worldviews. The RVCC Hub brand of convergence science works with both the best modern science offers and the incredible knowledges and wisdom Indigenous Peoples hold about the earth. Therefore, the only way to make this science work is to work in partnership with a host of institutions – from local communities to major scientific organizations. Haskell’s RVCC Hub honors the ancient wisdom of many Indigenous Peoples: If you are rich in good relationship, the resources you need will follow. The RVCC Hub show Haskell is rich in good relations.”
