HINU New Student Policies

Haskell Indian Nations University and the Bureau of Indian Education are committed to the safety and well-being of students, staff, and faculty. Building on our commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment, Haskell initiated significant updates to policies and procedural reforms regarding sexual harassment, discrimination, and the code of conduct. These targeted reforms ensure compliance with Executive Order 13160 and that Haskell students are afforded protections in parity with those afforded to students attending colleges and universities subject to the U.S. Department of Education’s Title IX implementing regulations. The formal publication of these policy reforms includes changes to Title IX regulations, which were issued in late April 2024 by the ED.

Additionally, Haskell has enhanced its support services with the role of a campus advocate coordinator, established in 2022, to directly serve Haskell students and lead initiatives in investigating and reporting sexual misconduct incidents. The advocate collaborates with experts in campus safety, sexual misconduct response, and law enforcement, as well as local support organizations for victims of assault, ensuring a comprehensive approach to advocacy and support for the Haskell community.

Haskell also recently expanded behavioral health services for students and staff. These services are provided in addition to the BIE Behavioral Health and Wellness Program. The campus advocate listed above may provide more information on Haskell resources. For more information on the BIE BHWP, which includes crisis support and virtual counseling services for all schools within the BIE, students and staff may call 1-844-ASK-BHWP (1-855-275-2497) and select Option 1 for immediate individual crisis support. Adults ages 18+ may choose Option 2 to schedule virtual counseling sessions with a licensed clinician. These services are free, provided 24 hours per day, seven days per week, confidential, and provided through an Indigenous lens.
