Meet the President

Alex Red Corn (Ed.D) is a citizen of the Osage Nation, where he is a member of the (Gentle Sky/Peacekeeper) clan, with family roots in the ͘ district near Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Dr. Red Corn is serving as Acting Haskell President through an Intergovernmental Personnel Agreement with the Bureau of Indian Education and the University of Kansas.

Dr. Red Corn joined the University of Kansas in Summer of 2024, where he was serving as Director and Associate Professor of Indigenous Studies, as well as Associate Vice Chancellor for the newly established Office of Sovereign Partnerships and Indigenous Initiatives. He received his doctorate in Educational Leadership from Kansas State University where he served as junior faculty with research, teaching, and service focusing on American Indian educational systems. He also served as Executive Director of the Kansas Association for Native American Education (KANAE), and in 2022 he become the Chair of the new Kansas Advisory Council for Indigenous Education (KACIE).

In these roles Dr. Red Corn developed a new Indigenous Educational Leadership Graduate Certificate program in partnership with the Tribal Education Departments National Assembly, as well partnership programs with the Osage Nation that graduated two cohorts of Osage leaders with master’s degrees in educational leadership.

Overall, Dr. Red Corns scholarship and leadership philosophies are focused on building capacities for Native Nations to take on a more prominent role in the education of their citizens.  Towards this goal, he has consulted with school and tribal leaders across the country on variety of topics related to advancing education for, about, and with Indigenous peoples, communities, and Nations.  Additionally, Dr. Red Corn has worked to bridge the fields of rural and Indigenous education through a variety of scholarly endeavors, and has also taught courses in qualitative research methods, specializing in Indigenous approaches to research and autoethnography.
